Here is the first discussion topic!

How Gaia Handles Mature Content

A member or roleplayer must enable mature content in their profile. To do this, they have to have a valid birthdate that shows them to be over 18 and enable mature content.

As writers, if we feel a post is definitely 18+, we just flip the mature content toggle at the bottom of the posting window (it can also be toggled on and off after posting).

Therefore, is a member / roleplayer has not enabled mature content in their profile, they cannot view the posts marked as mature.

My Opinion

I loathe the RPG Rating System. It is a pain in the tookus!

My recommendation is that we add a section in our rules regarding Content and viewing content marked Mature. After all, there is no way that we can verify if someone has input their correct birth year. We just need a statement so that we are protected.

So, if we write something that we feel shouldn't be viewed by anyone under 18, that prevents guests and members who have not set up their profiles from even seeing it. We're safe!

Thoughts, opinions, letters, hate mail?

The way I see it, the simplest solution is all or nothing.  I've been a part of quite a few RPs over the years, some mature, some not.  And generally, they all go for that solution.  Reason being is what happens when a plot-centric post is marked as Mature on a mixed-content RP.  Those who aren't old enough and/or choose not to read Mature content will miss out on certain plot points.  That can potentially mess with continuity.  Star Army (as an example) mixes content, but it's still per-RP.  They don't cross-pollinate their plots.  If you want to write Mature content, you join a Mature RP.

My suggestion is to make a decision; do you want Aereth to be Mature, or "PG-13"?  If you choose Mature, as long as there's some sort of age confirmation and a disclaimer post in the Announcements forum, then you're covered.  Legally, that's about all you are expected to do.  People joining us will be a very specific audience.  The odds of someone faking a birthday to read a raunchy sex scene and/or drop an F-bomb here, specifically, is very low... the internet has no shortage of adult content that's easier to access.  ;)

Great points and thank you for all the feedback, here an in the other topics!

I am leaning hard toward simply marking the site as 18+. Considering the setting, we might run the gamut of extreme violence. That's where marking a topic mature will come into play. If the writer considers it extreme (violance, language, sex), they can simply flip the switch and even add tags. It is then up to those that join if they read that topic or no.

Personally, I do not read or write ERP, I am a fade-to-black kinda gal. However, I can see scenes where the violence gets extreme that I might be participating in and would feel better giving the thread a warning. Leave it to everyone else whether to read or not.

We'll leave it to the roleplayers to decide their own comfort level.

Brand new member here but since feedback is requested I'm never shy about giving my opinions for whatever they are worth.

I think just make it an 18+ site, if people lie when they enter their age, can't control that and as already said, you're covered anyhow.

Just because it is 18+ doesn't mean there has to be any word porn. Almost all 18+ games I have been in over the years have had very little of that anyhow, good writers are more into characterization and interesting plots than that sort of thing.

Exactly this.

Sounds good to me. We will rate the site as is, 18+ for occasional mature content. We'll leave it to our members to police themselves on what they see and read. I still think if a thread is very graphic, our writers should mark it mature. Even if people set the Mature Toggle in their profile, they will see it marked mature before they start reading.

Also, taking the second to mark a thread mature keeps the random browser from seeing those posts.

It's win-win.
