Sofiya has a variety of skills and knowledge gleaned from her training as a paramedic and EMT on Earth as well as a wide and varied knowledge of alternative medicine, particularly Far Eastern Medicine (such as Chinese).
She is seeking to incorporate this knowledge and these skills as she learns more of the world she finds herself in. She is having to learn how to deal with the limitations of the technology on Gaia and still leverage what she can in order to help those around her. Her abilities will make her invaluable as a healer and physician.
Acupuncture: An alternative medical approach where thin needles are inserted into a person’s skin at key points in the body.
Homeopathic and Herbal Medicine: the practice of medicine that embraces a holistic, natural approach to the treatment of the sick.
Therapeutic Massage: Therapeutic massage is a general term that describes any type of massage modality that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on a specific problem.
Reiki: A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being. (Studied the practice back on Earth but ultimately felt that it was ineffective)

Home & Residence
|Estate / Hold / Farm||Stormholm Caer|
|Region / Province||Harkania March|
|Country of Residence||Cymeria|
|Town / Village||Duskhallow Village|
|City||Dinas Ulchedir (Harkania)|
|Residence / Lodging||Stormholm Caer
Sofiya has been given living quarters within Stormholm Caer. They are located in the wing of the keep where the single ladies of the House are located and consist of a living and dining area, bed chamber, bathing chamber/privy and dressing chamber.
Stormholm is the hereditary seat of House Stormdanovich. It has stood watch over Harkania for just over 2000 years. The formation on which it rests is impervious to erosion and riddled with caverns and tunnels that were once lava tubes. The land beneath is still geothermally active and the caves are host to a myriad of hot springs and mudpots. The hot springs provide a steady source of hot water to the castle and the volcanic mudpots harden into a nearly impervious material used for facing the stones of the buildings and can be kilned into pots, pans, drinkware and dinnerware. Stormholm Caer also sits above a vast and perennial source of fresh water. A massive river flows through one of the main caverns that sits beneath the castle, is split by a massive granite formation and leaps from the cliffs to fall to Daranau Afon far below. Archways were built over the falls and parts of the keep sits directly over the waterfalls making it appear as if they spring from the very castle. The higher and larger waterfall is called the Great Thunder and the lower one is Quiet Thunder.
|Original Birthplace||Gallup, New Mexico, Earth
Gallup is a city in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. With a population of approximately 22,000, Gallup is considered a small town by American standards. A substantial percentage of its population is Native American, with residents from the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes.
Gallup was founded in 1881 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. During World War II, the city fought successfully to prevent 800 Japanese American residents from being placed in wartime internment. Gallup is known as the "Heart of Indian Country" because it is in the middle of the Navajo reservation and home to many tribes.
Gallup is sometimes called the "Indian Capital of the World", for its location in the heart of Native American lands, and the presence of Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, and other tribes. One third of the city's population has Native American roots. Gallup's nickname references the huge impact of the Native American cultures found in and around the city.
Growing up in an area with such a diverse Native American population gave Sofiya an appreciation of cultural diversity. This was enhanced by watching her father work with the reservation law enforcement authorities while successfully keeping the peace off the rez. It was the shamanistic approach to spiritual beliefs and healing that helped influence her toward her later career as an emergency medical specialist.
Sofiya grew up loving the semi-arid landscape of her home, even enjoying the hot dry days and cold, often near freezing nights. Although she did travel a bit, she always felt that the stars of home were brighter and closer to Earth when she was in the desert.
Sofiya grew up in a modest Spanish-style villa that her father inherited from his parents.
|Hair||Pale Blond: Sofiya’s hair, in her opinion, is one of her more stand-out features. It’s long and blond, reaching a few inches above her waist, with a hint of a natural wave. It’s thick and coarse so it takes and holds styles well, especially curls and braids, which are her usual go-to style.|
|Eyes||Light Blue: Sofi’s eyes are a light shade of blue with a faint hint of green. Her eyes often reflect her mood and may appear to shift between blue and green depending on lighting or clothing worn.|
|Build / Stature||Sofi is a petite woman with a trim but curvy frame. She tries to watch what she eats and exercises regularly.
|Marks / Scars||Sofi has a couple of faded scars from various falls and scrapes as a child. On each of her ankles, she has a small tattoo. The left ankle bears the letter P and the right, the letter M. They stand for Penelope and Makenna, Sofi’s mother and sister, whom she’s both lost to cancer. She also has double piercings in both ears.|
|Style||Back on her birth world, Sofi had a pretty casual look when it came to her clothes. Whatever was clean and comfortable worked for the most part. Upon her arrival in Aereth, she’s done her best to blend in, wearing what the locals do. Regardless of what world she lives on, Sofi likes to be clean, bathing at the end of the night if possible and taking *bird baths* when it’s not.|
|Character Looks Like||Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones.|
|Personality Traits||- Stubborn
- Impulsive at times
|Personality||Being stubborn has been a positive quality in her career. Her refusal to accept defeat has saved more than one patient in her care. However, her refusal to accept defeat can be a detriment as sometimes she has issues with impulse control. Sofi can be a Leap Before You Look sort of person, making impulsive, spur of the moment decisions without fully thinking everything through and this had gotten her into trouble more than once. This tendency for impulsive decisions is definitely going to put her in even more dangerous situations as she finds herself in a brand new world with creatures and things she’s never seen before.
There’s an expression: Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back. This might have been written about Sofi herself. She’s found herself in this brand new world, and while there are things that scare the living hell out of her, she can’t help but be curious and fascinated about everything around her. She is also quite intelligent, happy to share her knowledge about things. She enjoys learning about new things and is quick to pick up on what she’s been taught or shown.
Sofi is a natural caregiver. She’s warm and caring, putting people at ease when they are under her care. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, always ready with a playful or teasing quip. To those closest to her heart, Sofi can be quite affectionate as she believes in showing someone how she feels about them rather than playing games and forcing someone to guess. She feels there’s no point in playing games with people, especially those she cares about as they can be taken away in an instant. This is something that stems from the loss of both her mother and sister. Hold those you love close because you never know when they’ll be gone.
Sofiya is very confident in her skills as a paramedic and EMT. Initially, upon coming to Aereth, she also felt confident that such a society could teach her nothing due to the vast difference in technology between Earth and Aereth. She quickly comes to understand and appreciate that not everything can be defined by technology and that she can learn a great deal from the people of Aereth.
|Mannerisms||To those on Aereth, Sofi may seem to be an oddity, which is somewhat fair considering she isn’t from there. She uses expressions and phrases that don’t make a lot of sense to those in her new home. She is polite when she speaks to someone, even if she doesn’t agree with what they are saying. She’s respectful even when she’s arguing a point and doesn’t have a problem standing up for something she believes is right.
Sofiya can be expressive when she talks, often using her hands for emphasis without really realizing it. When she’s excited, she tends to speak a little quickly and her gestures are bigger. She carries a firm tone when it comes to her work and getting someone to cooperate and isn’t afraid of *puffing* herself up when she means business. According to Sofi, she doesn’t have any sort of accent, but to the people of Aereth, it’s obvious she’s not one of them. Her voice is, however, light and in the alto range in pitch.
Sofiya is seeking out training and knowledge from various healers and medical texts to enhance her information and skills with an eye to applying them in her new homeland. There is much to learn as much of Earth’s medical practices relies heavily on hard technology. She sees a venue on Aereth to incorporate her training in holistic and homeopathic medical practices into the knowledge and technology they possess.
Like most other children her age, Sofiya attended kindergarten, elementary, middle and then high school in her hometown of Gallup, New Mexico. She was a curious and intelligent child, eager to soak up information like a little sponge, which brought her good grades and a high GPA when she graduated from high school.
She also took on training to become first an EMT, (Emergency Medical Technician) then went on to become a full Paramedic. When her sister became ill, Sofi undertook classes and training in some homeopathic medicine such as Acupuncture, Massage Therapy as well as Reiki, which unfortunately didn’t seem to show any results.
As a teenager, Sofi interned with the Park Rangers that oversaw the McKinley County portions of the Canyon de Chelly National Park. She learned survival skills over the two summers she did as an intern.
|Languages||English/Saesneg: native language, fluent, spoken and written
Spanish: fluent, spoken and written
|Dexterity & Mobility||Sofi is left-handed, which in some cultures in her birth world, meant that she was special or had some sort of spiritual powers. She never put any faith into the superstitions, however, she just used her left where a majority used their right. She’s also light on her feet, usually walking with a quick step, which is gentle and graceful as well.
- Therapeutic Massage
- Horseback Riding
- Rock Climbing
- Kickboxing (for cardio exercise not self defense)
- Bow hunting
Sofiya has a wide variety of skills although many of them were considered hobbies and not professional expertise.
Some of Sofi’s fondest memories are of the camping, hunting and fishing trips that her father would take her and her younger sister, Kenna, on. While Kenna was too young at the time to learn, Edward taught Sofi how to swim, hunt and fish, how to build campfires as well as some basic survival skills. Sofi would later learn the rest when she interned with the Park Rangers over the course of two summers as a teenager.
Sofi learned to ride horses during her summer internship. She’s no expert but can stay on and ride well enough.
Combat & Weapons
|Training & Skills||Sofiya has not had formal training in combat although her father saw to it that she had basic self-defense training but that is not a skill she has had to use. However, she does have skills and abilities that can be incorporated into combat and self defense.
Sofiya took a course in basic self defense but has not kept those skills alive due to a perception of a lack of need to do so. As it allowed her to work on her cardio health as well as muscle tone, Sofiya did take courses in kickboxing and go to a gym. The courses, however, emphasized exercise not defense.
Has had training in archery and was on her high school’s archery team. She has some experience with recurve bows, compound bows and crossbows. She would deem herself slightly above proficient in their use. Sofiya is quite a proficient bow hunter, always preferring that method to using a rifle or shotgun for hunting.
Although firearms do not exist on Aereth, Sofi was trained in their care and use. She had her permit to carry and was proficient on the range. Her father made sure she kept her permits and certifications up to date.
Note: Sofiya will pursue some training in survival and combat skills as a necessity for survival on Aereth. As a healer, however, she would never be considered a combatant and has no desire to emulate Xena: Warrior Princess.
|Weapons||At her arrival in Aereth, Sofi has only a little weapons training. Sure, she can wield a frying pan as a weapon if needed and can maybe hold her own in a fight...provided her opponent is less trained than she is, but super trained attack ninja she is not.
Sofi will undergo weapons training and will find that she enjoys the quarterstaff over swords or daggers. This will become her weapon of choice in most situations.
Long Bladed Dagger / Hunting Knife
After her arrival on Aereth, Sofiya acquired both a long bladed dagger and hunting knife. Her training with her father and time interning as a park ranger made her realize there could be a need for both in order to survive.
For general self defense, Sofiya carries a small crossbow that was commissioned for her and accommodates her smaller stature.
Sofiya was given a longbow that she carries but does not rely on it for self defense. It is primarily a hunting weapon although, in a pinch, she can and will use it to defend herself and others.
Note: She may also find that she is adept at using throwing stars as well. I will update this field as these come into play.
Arcane Skills & Abilities
Edward Grace is the Sheriff for the McKinley County County’s Sheriff’s Department in New Mexico. He’s served for over twenty years, starting at the very bottom as a trainee after graduating high school and working his way up the ranks until he became Sheriff. Those that know him describe him as honorable, loyal and a good man.
|Mother||Penelope Grace (deceased)
Sofi was only six when her mother passed away after battling breast cancer. Penny was diagnosed the previous year during her pregnancy with Sofi’s younger sister, Kenna. She was given a couple of options; terminate the pregnancy and begin immediate chemo and radiation therapy or take her chances and continue with the pregnancy knowing that there was a high chance that the cancer might kill her and the baby before she could deliver. She chose to keep her second daughter, giving birth to her a few months before her death.
|Sister(s)||Makenna Grace (deceased)
Kenna was Sofiya’s sister and younger by five years. Three years ago, Kenna was diagnosed with Stage Three ovarian cancer. She chose to fight the disease using chemotherapy and radiation at first, hoping to keep her fertility. The cancer continued to grow despite treatment, and she ended up having a full hysterectomy as well. It didn’t help as the cancer had spread faster than they’d expected and soon there wasn’t anything they could do. She passed away a month previous, leaving Sofi with their father as her only remaining family.
|Family Relationships||Family is everything to Sofiya. She grew up in a loving household, raised with her sister by their father after their mother’s death. Sofi believes that there is more to family than blood, it’s love and who one chooses to share a familial bond with. No matter what someone has done, you don’t turn your back on them, you offer them a hand up.
Edward loved and cherished both of his daughters equally, giving no favor to either of them as they grew up. He provided for them, giving them everything they needed but not everything they wanted, wanting his daughters to learn the value of money and working hard to achieve something they want.
Sofi loved her little sister from the moment she was born and will until her own dying day. When Kenna became ill, Sofi wanted to help her, do something, anything beyond watching her baby sister wither away with cancer. She began researching, educating herself in alternative medicine, homeopathic herbs and medicines, acupuncture. She tried it all, but sadly none of it helped and she lost her sister just as she’d lost her mother many years before.
|In the early 1980s, Karl Johannson relocated his family to Gallup, New Mexico after accepting a contract with the Escalante Generating Station, one of the primary power companies in the southwest. The family, which included his wife, Regan, and daughter, Penelope, were originally from Reykjavík, Iceland. Prior to that, the Johannssons were only a generation out of Norway.
c. 1880s: Edward Grace’s family originally came west from New York City with the promise of a better life and better jobs out west. They were some of the first employees at the new Atlantic and Pacific Railroad’s railhead. They settled and made a good life in the area with Edward being the most recent in a long line of local law enforcement officers from the Grace family.
April 1984 - Local deputy Edward Grace is dispatched to the Gallup City Library where some vandalism has occurred. Here he meets Penelope Johannsson, the assistant Librarian. It isn’t long before Edward falls in love with the Nordic beauty.
April 1986 - Edward proposes to Penelope on their second anniversary and they begin planning their wedding for the following year.
June 1987 - Edward and Penelope are married. Edward is working for the Sheriff’s department while Penelope is now the Librarian at the Gallup City Library.
November 1988 - Edward campaigns and is elected Sheriff of McKinley County, New Mexico.
April 1989 - Penelope discovers she is pregnant with her first child. She and Edward are both overjoyed and eager to be starting a family. They hope this baby is the first of a few.
December 25, 1989 - Sofiya Rose Grace is born to her parents.
November 1993 - Penelope Grace is diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. She is given the option to terminate her pregnancy in order to undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatments. She refuses, wanting to continue with the pregnancy despite knowing the chances of her own survival.
June 14, 1994 - Makenna Cheyenne Grace is born healthy and happy.
August 19, 1994 - Penelope succumbs to the cancer and passes away, leaving her husband and two young children.
|December 25, 1989: Sofiya Rose Grace is born to Penelope and Edward Grace.
Penelope Grace is diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. She is given the option to terminate her pregnancy in order to undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatments. She refuses, wanting to continue with the pregnancy despite knowing the chances of her own survival. As young as she was, Sofi didn’t quite understand exactly what was going on with her mom, other than she wasn’t feeling good. She did know that she was going to be a big sister, and that excitement seemed to drown everything else out for her at that point.
June 14, 1994
Makenna Cheyenne Grace is born healthy and happy. From minute one, Sofi adored her baby sister, always wanting to hold and feed her. Little Kenna was like a living doll! She loved being able to help her mom with the baby, which was a godsend to Penny as she was growing weaker every day. The infant’s name was actually Makenna, but to little Sofi, it sounded like My Kenna, which was perfect because Kenna was HER baby sister, and no one else’s! “She’s MY Kenna, not YOUR Kenna!”
August 19, 1994: Penelope succumbs to the cancer and passes away, leaving her husband and two young children.
Sofi begins Kindergarten. Surrounded by other kids her age, Sofi gets to indulge more in make-believe, where she and her friends are Kings and Queens and magic ruled the land, where the floor was lava and toy dragons became real. It was a nice break from the sadness at home. She would often come home to the babysitter and her baby sister and put on plays and tell them stories, which, as she grew older, became mixed with Native American folklore. She did the same when her daddy came home from work, wanting to see him smile even if he was sad and tired. No matter how tired Eddie was, he loved watching his oldest daughter play and pretend, and there were many a tea party.
September 1995 to June 2008
Sofi’s elementary, middle and high school years are filled with typical stuff; friends, school, caring for her younger sister, camping trips with Kenna and Dad, etc.
Being sixteen, Sofi offers to get a summer job to help put money in her own pocket as well as help out her father. Edward tells her it’s not needed, that he will take care of whatever she needs, but does suggest that she get out of the house. Sofi does her first of two summers interning with the Canyon de Chelly National Park’s Ranger Service. She chooses this path to further develop survival skills that were started by her father when she was younger. Plus, it gives her the chance to explore more of the land, which she loved and got her more in touch with the cultures of the Native Americans.
Sofi’s second summer as an Intern. Like her father, and the several generations before him, Sofi wants to help people, but she’s not interested in law enforcement. So this time, she spends half her time with the Rangers and the other half as a Candy Striper at the Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital. Volunteering at the hospital gave Sofi an up-close look at First Responders and how vital they are in an emergency. It was then that she decided that she wanted to become a paramedic after she graduated from high school.
Sofi graduates high school with a 3.5 GPA with a focus in Biology and Human Anatomy.
Sofi spends the summer making sure she has all the needed prerequisites to start her EMT training in the fall, such as her CPR certification, ensuring that all of her vaccinations are up to date and so on. She registers for the course and takes the placement exam and is ranked within the top 10% of the class.
Fall to Winter 2008
Sofi attends twice weekly classes for 14 weeks and completes the required 12 hours of clinical and 12 hours of fieldwork as well as multiple additional ride-a-longs with seasoned Medics. She completes her certification as an EMT with the love and support from her father and sister.
January 2009 to June 2010
While her younger sister, Kenna, is in her early years of high school, Sofi works as an EMT, often on opposite shifts than her father’s at the Sheriff’s Department in order to be available to her sister as needed.
July 2010 to September 2011
Sofi begins her 14 month training in order to become a full-blown Paramedic. Her training is broken up into three phases; Didactic, Clinical and Field. At the completion of the course, Sofiya has the cognitive and psychomotor skills to competently perform all skills of the EMT, Advanced EMT, plus advanced airway management, surgical cricothyrotomy, needle thoracostomy, electrocardiogram interpretation, cardiac defibrillation/cardioversion/external pacing, intravenous access, intraosseous infusion, and administration of a wide range of medications.
Sofi’s life is rocked by a tragic diagnosis. Her sister Kenna is diagnosed with Stage III Ovarian Cancer. Kenna chooses to fight each step of the way, taking on both radiation and chemotherapy. Sofi is 100% supportive of all of her sister’s choices. Kenna’s illness was a major turning point in her life, a darker reality to her once fanciful childhood. It opened her eyes more to the fact that bad things do happen to good people.
Despite intense treatments, Kenna’s cancer continues to spread rapidly, forcing her to have a hysterectomy, which she had opted against earlier as she wanted to keep her fertility. It was around this time that Sofi started having doubts as to whether modern medicine would do anything to help her sister. She begins researching homeopathic medicine and other alternative methods.
November 2013 to August 2016
Sofi does her best to balance her work and her personal life, working only a few paramedic shifts a week in order to be there for her sister. She’s also neck deep in additional classes and training in both massage therapy (to help with her sister’s constant pain) and Ancient Chinese Medicine, specifically Acupuncture, hoping that the ancient Chinese route might help save her sister. She even studied and attempted the practice known as Reiki, a practice where it’s believed that one can activate the healing process in another’s body by the use of touch. She’d been skeptical to start with on that one, and when nothing happened, she took it with a grain of salt. Miracles supposedly happened every day, why wasn’t she getting one? Why did her sister have to stay so sick? Did helping people and being a good person mean nothing to the universe? Monsters win and there was no prince riding in on a horse to sweep her off her feet. Reality sucked.
August 20, 2016
Unfortunately, despite modern medicine, homeopathic medicine and a lot of prayers, Makenna passes away after fighting for over four years with cancer. This leaves Sofi and her father alone, both utterly heartbroken and devastated by their loss. Both take some time off work to begin grieving and processing the tragedy. Kenna’s death is 22 years and one day away from the day that the family lost Penelope.
Sofi travels out to the Canyon De Chelly National Monument, which had been one of Kenna’s favorite places to visit when they were younger. She goes out with the intent of spreading her sister’s ashes, bidding her father goodbye with promises to see him in a couple of days. She never returns home.
While spreading Kenna’s ashes over one of the Sipapus in the Canyon, Sofi feels a strange sensation, becomes lightheaded and dizzy and collapses...or so she believes. When she comes to a few seconds later, she’s not where she was, the landscape is vastly different. It’s day instead of evening and she has absolutely no clue that she’s been transported to the land of Aereth via a magical portal.
Aereth 3550 - 3551
Sofiya found herself in an alien world far from her beloved desert and besieged by dragons, no less! Rescue did arrive, albeit not on a white charger, and Sofiya will face finding herself in the world of her childhood dreams...one that should not exist and which she came to no longer believe in.
